## 4. Trial & Freemium Configuration

### 4.1 Configure Free Trial Duration and Access Level
**What it does:** Defines the free trial experience: how long a trial lasts, what a trial user can access during it, and what happens at trial end. The Super Administrator sets the trial duration and the access level (which features and content a trial user reaches), so the trial is a controlled, consistent preview of the platform that converts to a paid membership through a defined path.

**Sub-features:**
- Trial duration setting (the number of days/period for a new trial)
- Trial access level: the features and content a trial user can use
- Trial eligibility: who can start a trial (new users, once per user rules)
- Trial end behavior: what happens when the trial expires (downgrade to freemium, prompt to subscribe)
- Trial-to-paid conversion path: the subscription prompt at trial end
- Trial state visibility: active trials, expiring trials, and their access level
- Audit logging of trial configuration changes

**Super Administrator User Journey:**
1. The team decides the trial should be 14 days with access to the core learning features. Super Admin opens Trial & Freemium Configuration.
2. Sets the trial duration to 14 days and configures the access level: trial users can access courses, assessments, and progress tracking, but not the premium-only features.
3. Confirms the trial eligibility: a new user can start one trial; the once-per-user rule is enforced.
4. Sets the trial-end behavior: at expiry, the account downgrades to the freemium level (see 4.2) and the user is prompted to subscribe to continue with full access.
5. Saves; new trials follow the configuration immediately.
6. Reviews the trial state view: active trials with their start/end dates, and the expiring-soon list (to inform any conversion outreach).
7. For a trial user at day 13, the platform shows the expiry prompt; the user subscribes (converting to paid) or, at day 14, the account downgrades to freemium with the access-level change applied.
8. The trial configuration change is audit-logged with the duration, access level, and the timestamp.

**Rules & Edge Cases:**
- The trial duration and access level are consistent for all new trials; there is no ad-hoc trial without a configuration change.
- Trial eligibility (once per user) is enforced; a user who has used a trial cannot start another without an explicit, audited exception.
- Trial-end behavior is defined (downgrade to freemium and/or prompt to subscribe); it is not an abrupt cutoff without communication.
- The access level is enforced like any permission: a trial user cannot reach premium features during the trial.
- Expiring trials are visible so conversion outreach can be timed.
- Trial configuration changes are audit-logged with the acting admin and timestamp.

### 4.2 Configure Freemium Content Limits
**What it does:** Defines the freemium (free, non-trial) tier: which content is freely available (free courses) and the limits on constrained capabilities (such as a cap on AI interactions). The Super Administrator sets the free-content set and the usage limits, so the freemium tier is a clear, bounded offering that motivates upgrade without blocking basic use.

**Sub-features:**
- Free-content set: the courses/content available on the freemium tier
- Usage limits on constrained capabilities (e.g., a monthly cap on AI interactions)
- Limit enforcement: the cap is tracked per user and enforced with a clear upgrade prompt at the limit
- Free-content designation: marking courses/content as freemium-available
- Limit and free-content visibility: the current freemium offering and limits
- Upgrade path: the prompt at a limit or when premium content is reached
- Audit logging of freemium configuration changes

**Super Administrator User Journey:**
1. The team selects 10 courses to be freely available on the freemium tier. Super Admin designates them as freemium-available in the configuration.
2. Sets the AI-interaction limit: 20 interactions per user per month on the freemium tier.
3. Saves; the freemium offering is live: the 10 courses are accessible without a subscription, and the AI cap applies to freemium users.
4. A freemium user works through a free course and uses AI interactions; the platform tracks their usage against the 20/month cap.
5. At the 20th interaction, the next attempt shows the limit message with the upgrade prompt (subscribe for unlimited AI).
6. The user attempts to open a premium (non-free) course; they see the content with the upgrade prompt (the course is visible but not fully accessible on freemium).
7. Reviews the freemium visibility view: the free-content set, the current limits, and the freemium user counts.
8. The freemium configuration change is audit-logged with the free-content set, the limits, and the timestamp.

**Rules & Edge Cases:**
- The free-content set is explicit: a course is freemium-available only if designated; otherwise it is subscription-gated.
- Usage limits are tracked per user and enforced with a clear message and upgrade prompt at the cap — not a silent block.
- The limit resets per the defined period (monthly); the reset is automatic and visible to the user.
- Freemium users can always use the basic platform (account, free content); the limits constrain the premium capabilities, not the account.
- The upgrade path is consistent: reaching a limit or premium content prompts subscription, routed to the membership/checkout flow.
- Freemium configuration changes are audit-logged with the acting admin and timestamp.
