## 3. Academic Goals & Milestones

### 3.1 Academic Goals
**What it does:** Lets the Student set and manage their academic goals (e.g., improve grades, prepare for final exams, master a subject, achieve a target score). Goals are visible on the dashboard, drive the "Goal Progress" view, and feed the Smart Study Planner and AI Study Companion. The Student can add, edit, pause, and complete goals.

**Sub-features:**
- Add an academic goal with a title, target, and optional deadline
- Select goal type: improve grades, prepare for exam, master a subject, achieve a score
- Set a target value (e.g., 75% in Mathematics) and an optional deadline
- View all goals on the dashboard with status (active, paused, completed)
- Edit a goal's target, deadline, or type
- Pause and resume a goal
- Mark a goal as completed (manual or automatic when target reached)
- Goal progress tracking against the target
- Goal visibility in the profile summary
- Goal change event logging
- Audit logging of the academic goals

**Student User Journey:**
1. Student opens Profile → "Goals & milestones" and clicks "Add goal".
2. Student enters the goal: type "Achieve a score", target "75% in Mathematics", deadline "15 June 2025", then clicks "Save".
3. The goal appears on the dashboard with status "Active" and a progress bar at the current projection.
4. As the Student studies and takes assessments, the goal progress updates automatically.
5. Student opens the goal and clicks "Pause" during a holiday; the status changes to "Paused" and it is excluded from the active plan.
6. Student clicks "Resume" when back; the goal returns to "Active".
7. When the target is reached, the goal is marked "Completed" automatically and a celebration is shown.
8. Student opens Profile → "Change history" and confirms the goal events are recorded with timestamps.

**Rules & Edge Cases:**
- A goal requires a title and a target; the deadline is optional.
- The target value is validated (e.g., a score within 0–100).
- A paused goal is excluded from the active plan and reminders but retains its progress.
- A goal is completed automatically when the target is reached, or manually by the Student.
- Goal events (add, edit, pause, resume, complete) are logged with the values and the timestamp.
- The academic goals are audit-logged with the account, the goal, and the timestamp.

### 3.2 Milestones
**What it does:** Lets the Student break a goal into milestones (intermediate checkpoints) and track progress toward each. Milestones give the Student a sense of forward motion and feed the gamification (points, badges) and the "Goal Progress" view. The Student can add, complete, and edit milestones.

**Sub-features:**
- Add a milestone to a goal with a title and optional target date
- Order milestones within a goal
- Mark a milestone as complete (manual or automatic)
- View milestone progress on the goal and the dashboard
- Edit a milestone's title or target date
- Remove a milestone
- Milestone completion feeds gamification (points, badges)
- Milestone visibility in the profile summary
- Milestone change event logging
- Audit logging of the milestones

**Student User Journey:**
1. Student opens a goal ("75% in Mathematics") and clicks "Add milestone".
2. Student adds milestones: "Finish Functions chapter" (target 1 June), "Score 60% on Functions quiz" (target 10 June), then clicks "Save".
3. The milestones appear in order under the goal with "Not started" status.
4. Student completes the first milestone (finishes the chapter); it is marked "Complete" and points are awarded.
5. Student opens the dashboard and sees the goal progress reflect the completed milestone.
6. Student edits the second milestone's target date to 12 June and saves.
7. Student opens Profile → "Change history" and confirms the milestone events are recorded with timestamps.

**Rules & Edge Cases:**
- A milestone belongs to a goal and requires a title; the target date is optional.
- Milestones are ordered within a goal; reordering is allowed.
- A milestone is completed manually or automatically when its condition is met.
- Completing a milestone awards gamification points/badges per the platform's rules.
- Removing a milestone does not affect the goal's overall target.
- Milestone events (add, complete, edit, remove) are logged with the values and the timestamp.
- The milestones are audit-logged with the account, the milestone, and the timestamp.

### 3.3 Target Score and Exam Date Tracking
**What it does:** Lets the Student record target scores per subject and important exam dates (school exams, board exams, competitive exams). These feed the "Goal Progress" view (current projection vs target), the Smart Study Planner's countdown scheduling, and the Target Exam Feature. The Student can add, edit, and remove entries.

**Sub-features:**
- Record a target score per subject (e.g., 75% in Mathematics)
- Record an important exam date with name, type, and date
- View target scores and exam dates on the dashboard
- Current projection vs target shown for each subject
- Exam countdown shown for upcoming exam dates
- Entries feed the Smart Study Planner countdown scheduling
- Entries feed the Target Exam Feature
- Edit or remove a target score or exam date
- Visibility in the profile summary
- Change event logging
- Audit logging of the target score and exam date tracking

**Student User Journey:**
1. Student opens Profile → "Goals & milestones" → "Targets & exam dates" and clicks "Add".
2. Student records a target score: "Mathematics — 75%" and an exam date: "Mid-Year Mathematics Exam, 15 June 2025", then clicks "Save".
3. The dashboard shows the target score with the current projection (e.g., 71%) and a countdown to the exam date.
4. The Smart Study Planner uses the exam countdown to schedule more sessions as the date approaches.
5. Student edits the target score to 80% and saves; the projection comparison updates.
6. Student removes a past exam date after the exam is over.
7. Student opens Profile → "Change history" and confirms the changes are recorded with timestamps.

**Rules & Edge Cases:**
- A target score is per subject and within 0–100.
- An exam date must be a valid date; past dates are flagged as "completed".
- The current projection is computed from the Student's recent performance, not the stated target.
- The exam countdown drives the Smart Study Planner's intensity as the date approaches.
- Entries feed the Target Exam Feature; a target exam can be created from an exam date.
- Changes are logged with the old and new values and the timestamp.
- The target score and exam date tracking is audit-logged with the account, the entry, and the timestamp.
