## 3. Notification Preferences

### 3.1 Notification Category Preferences
**What it does:** Lets the Student control which categories of notifications they receive: study reminders, exam alerts, achievements, social, and promotional. The Student enables or disables each category, and the platform respects the preferences across all channels. This gives the Student control over what they are notified about.

**Sub-features:**
- Notification categories (study, exam, achievement, social, promotional)
- Enable/disable a category
- Category preferences across all channels
- Default preferences on signup
- Preference changes take effect immediately
- Preferences available on web and mobile
- Preference event logging (changed)
- Audit logging of the notification category preferences

**Student User Journey:**

- Default preferences are set on signup.
- Preference events (changed) are logged with the account and the timestamp.
- The notification category preferences is audit-logged with the account and the timestamp.

### 3.2 Channel and Timing Preferences
**What it does:** Lets the Student choose the channels and timing for notifications. The Student selects which channels (in-app, email, push) to use per category, sets quiet hours, and chooses the daily digest time. The platform delivers notifications only on the chosen channels and outside quiet hours.

**Sub-features:**
- Channel selection per category (in-app, email, push)
- Quiet hours configuration
- Daily digest time
- Do-not-disturb window
- Channel preferences across categories
- Preferences available on web and mobile
- Preference event logging (changed)
- Audit logging of the channel and timing preferences

**Student User Journey:**
1. Student opens Notification Preferences → Channels.
2. Student selects push for study reminders and email for reports.
3. Student sets quiet hours (10 PM to 7 AM).
4. Student sets the daily digest time (8 AM).
5. Notifications are delivered only on the chosen channels.
6. Notifications are suppressed during quiet hours.
7. Student opens Profile → "Activity" and confirms the preference events are recorded.

**Rules & Edge Cases:**
- The Student selects channels per category.
- Quiet hours suppress notifications in the set window.
- The daily digest is sent at the set time.
- Preference events (changed) are logged with the account and the timestamp.
- The channel and timing preferences is audit-logged with the account and the timestamp.

### 3.3 Notification Frequency and Digest
**What it does:** Lets the Student control the frequency of notifications and opt into a daily digest. The Student chooses real-time or digest delivery for non-urgent notifications, and the digest summarizes the day's events. This reduces notification fatigue while keeping the Student informed.

**Sub-features:**
- Real-time vs digest delivery
- Daily digest of the day's events
- Digest content (reminders, alerts, achievements)
- Digest time configurable
- Frequency per category
- Preferences available on web and mobile
- Preference event logging (changed)
- Audit logging of the notification frequency and digest

**Student User Journey:**
1. Student opens Notification Preferences → Frequency.
2. Student chooses digest delivery for social notifications.
3. The daily digest summarizes the day's events.
4. The digest time is configurable.
5. Real-time delivery is kept for exam alerts.
6. Student views the preferences on the mobile app.
7. Student opens Profile → "Activity" and confirms the preference events are recorded.

**Rules & Edge Cases:**
- The Student chooses real-time or digest per category.
- The digest summarizes the day's events.
- The digest time is configurable.
- Preference events (changed) are logged with the account and the timestamp.
- The notification frequency and digest is audit-logged with the account and the timestamp.
