## 3. Auto-Renewal & Cancellation

### 3.1 Auto-Renewal Settings
**What it does:** Lets the Student manage auto-renewal for their subscription. The Student can turn auto-renewal on or off, see the next renewal date and amount, and be notified before a renewal. When auto-renewal is on, the subscription renews automatically at the end of each period.

**Sub-features:**
- Turn auto-renewal on or off
- Next renewal date and amount shown
- Notification before a renewal
- Auto-renewal renews the subscription at period end
- Change the payment method used for renewal
- Auto-renewal status visible on the subscription
- Auto-renewal event logging (enabled, disabled, renewed)
- Audit logging of the auto-renewal settings

**Student User Journey:**
1. Student opens "Subscription" → "Auto-renewal" and sees it is on.
2. The next renewal date and amount are shown.
3. Student receives a notification 3 days before the renewal.
4. Student turns auto-renewal off; the subscription will not renew.
5. Student changes the payment method used for renewal.
6. The auto-renewal status is visible on the subscription.
7. Student opens Profile → "Activity" and confirms the auto-renewal events are recorded.

**Rules & Edge Cases:**
- Auto-renewal, when on, renews the subscription at the end of each period.
- A notification is sent before a renewal (per the platform's lead time).
- Turning auto-renewal off stops future renewals; the current period runs out.
- The payment method for renewal can be changed.
- Auto-renewal events (enabled, disabled, renewed) are logged with the subscription and the timestamp.
- The auto-renewal settings is audit-logged with the account, the subscription, and the timestamp.

### 3.2 Cancel Subscription
**What it does:** Lets the Student cancel their subscription. The Student can cancel auto-renewal or cancel the subscription, with the option to keep access until the end of the paid period. Cancellation is confirmed, and the Student retains access until the period ends.

**Sub-features:**
- Cancel auto-renewal
- Cancel the subscription
- Keep access until the end of the paid period (where applicable)
- Cancellation confirmation
- Access ends at the period end after cancellation
- Cancel reason (optional)
- Cancel event logging (cancelled, reason)
- Audit logging of the cancel subscription

**Student User Journey:**
1. Student opens "Subscription" → "Cancel".
2. Student chooses to cancel and optionally provides a reason.
3. The platform confirms the cancellation and the access end date.
4. Student keeps access until the end of the paid period.
5. At the period end, access ends.
6. The cancellation is recorded.
7. Student opens Profile → "Activity" and confirms the cancel events are recorded.

**Rules & Edge Cases:**
- Cancellation stops future renewals.
- Access is retained until the end of the paid period where applicable.
- A cancel reason is optional and recorded.
- The cancellation is confirmed to the Student.
- Cancel events (cancelled, reason) are logged with the subscription and the timestamp.
- The cancel subscription is audit-logged with the account, the subscription, and the timestamp.

### 3.3 Reactivation and Grace Period
**What it does:** Supports reactivating a cancelled or lapsed subscription and handles a grace period. If a renewal fails, the Student enters a grace period during which they can fix the payment to keep access. The Student can reactivate a cancelled subscription at any time.

**Sub-features:**
- Reactivate a cancelled subscription
- Grace period after a failed renewal
- Fix the payment during the grace period to keep access
- Access suspended after the grace period ends
- Reactivation restores access immediately
- Grace period notifications
- Reactivation event logging (reactivated, grace entered, grace ended)
- Audit logging of the reactivation and grace period

**Student User Journey:**
1. A renewal fails; the Student enters a grace period and is notified.
2. Student fixes the payment method during the grace period; access is kept.
3. For a cancelled subscription, Student taps "Reactivate".
4. Reactivation restores access immediately.
5. If the grace period ends without payment, access is suspended.
6. Grace period notifications keep the Student informed.
7. Student opens Profile → "Activity" and confirms the reactivation events are recorded.

**Rules & Edge Cases:**
- A grace period follows a failed renewal; its length is set by the platform.
- Fixing the payment during the grace period keeps access.
- Access is suspended after the grace period ends without payment.
- Reactivation restores access immediately.
- Reactivation events (reactivated, grace entered, grace ended) are logged with the subscription and the timestamp.
- The reactivation and grace period is audit-logged with the account, the subscription, and the timestamp.
