## 2. Learning Preferences

### 2.1 Learning Style Preferences
**What it does:** Captures the Student's preferred learning style (visual, auditory, kinesthetic, or mixed) and content format preferences. These preferences guide how the platform presents content (e.g., prioritizing video for visual learners, audio/podcasts for auditory learners) and how the AI Study Companion and recommendations adapt to the Student.

**Sub-features:**
- Select preferred learning style: visual, auditory, kinesthetic, or mixed
- Select preferred content formats (video, audio/podcast, text, interactive)
- Preference drives content presentation order (e.g., video-first for visual learners)
- Preference influences AI Study Companion responses and recommendations
- Change learning style at any time from Profile
- Preference applied to new content and recommendations after a change
- Preference visibility in the profile summary
- Preference change event logging
- Audit logging of the learning style preferences

**Student User Journey:**
1. Student opens Profile → "Learning preferences" and sees the current learning style (Mixed) and preferred content formats.
2. Student changes the learning style to "Visual" and selects "Video" and "Interactive" as preferred formats, then clicks "Save".
3. The platform confirms the change; the dashboard and course pages now present video content first.
4. The AI Study Companion begins favoring visual explanations (diagrams, step-by-step visuals) in its responses.
5. Student opens Profile → "Learning preferences" and confirms the updated style and formats are shown.
6. Student opens Profile → "Change history" and confirms the preference change is recorded with the timestamp.

**Rules & Edge Cases:**
- The learning style is one of: visual, auditory, kinesthetic, or mixed; exactly one must be selected.
- At least one content format must be selected.
- A preference change applies to new content and recommendations from the point of change; already-completed content is not re-rendered.
- The preference is visible in the profile summary.
- Preference changes are logged with the old and new values and the timestamp.
- The learning style preferences are audit-logged with the account, the values, and the timestamp.

### 2.2 Subject and Topic Preferences
**What it does:** Captures which subjects and topics the Student wants to focus on, which subjects need the most help, and any topics to avoid or prioritize. These preferences drive the dashboard's "Continue learning" and "Recommended for you" sections, the Smart Study Planner, and the AI Study Companion's focus.

**Sub-features:**
- Select subjects needing the most help (multi-select from enrolled/available subjects)
- Select priority topics within a subject
- Mark topics to avoid (e.g., already mastered)
- Preferences drive "Recommended for you" and "Continue learning"
- Preferences feed the Smart Study Planner focus
- Preferences influence the AI Study Companion's subject focus
- Reorder or remove preferences at any time
- Preference visibility in the profile summary
- Preference change event logging
- Audit logging of the subject and topic preferences

**Student User Journey:**
1. Student opens Profile → "Learning preferences" → "Subjects & topics" and sees the current focus (Mathematics, Physical Sciences).
2. Student adds "Chemistry" to the subjects needing help and selects "Organic chemistry" as a priority topic, then clicks "Save".
3. The dashboard's "Recommended for you" now includes Chemistry content, and "Continue learning" reflects the new focus.
4. The Smart Study Planner begins including Chemistry in the weekly plan.
5. Student marks "Basic algebra" as a topic to avoid (already mastered); it no longer appears in recommendations.
6. Student opens Profile → "Change history" and confirms the preference changes are recorded with timestamps.

**Rules & Edge Cases:**
- Subjects can only be selected from those available to the Student (enrolled or in their grade/board).
- A topic to avoid is excluded from recommendations but not from assessments the Student must take.
- Preference changes apply to recommendations and planning from the point of change.
- The preferences are visible in the profile summary.
- Preference changes are logged with the old and new values and the timestamp.
- The subject and topic preferences are audit-logged with the account, the values, and the timestamp.

### 2.3 Study Time and Daily Study Time
**What it does:** Captures the Student's preferred study time of day (morning, afternoon, evening, late night) and the daily study time available (a slider in minutes/hours). These preferences drive the Smart Study Planner's scheduling, the "best time to study" insights, and reminder timing.

**Sub-features:**
- Select preferred study time of day: morning, afternoon, evening, or late night
- Set daily study time available via a slider (e.g., 30 minutes to 4 hours)
- Preference drives Smart Study Planner session scheduling
- Preference drives "best time to study" insights
- Preference drives reminder and notification timing
- Change study time or daily study time at any time
- Preference visibility in the profile summary
- Preference change event logging
- Audit logging of the study time and daily study time

**Student User Journey:**
1. Student opens Profile → "Learning preferences" → "Study time" and sees the current preference (Evening, 2 hours/day).
2. Student changes the study time to "Late night" and sets the daily study time slider to 90 minutes, then clicks "Save".
3. The Smart Study Planner now schedules sessions for late-night slots and sizes them to ~90 minutes.
4. Study reminders are now timed for the late-night window.
5. The "best time to study" insight on the dashboard updates to reflect the new preference and actual activity.
6. Student opens Profile → "Change history" and confirms the preference changes are recorded with timestamps.

**Rules & Edge Cases:**
- The study time of day is one of: morning, afternoon, evening, or late night.
- The daily study time is within the slider's minimum and maximum bounds.
- A preference change applies to scheduling and reminders from the point of change.
- The "best time to study" insight blends the stated preference with actual activity data.
- Preference changes are logged with the old and new values and the timestamp.
- The study time and daily study time are audit-logged with the account, the values, and the timestamp.
