## 4. Bookmarks & Notes

### 4.1 Content Bookmarks
**What it does:** Lets the Student bookmark any content item (video, podcast, article, lesson) to save it for later. Bookmarks are organized in a personal "Saved" list that the Student can filter by course and content type. Bookmarks are private to the Student and persist across devices.

**Sub-features:**
- Bookmark a content item (video, podcast, article, lesson)
- "Saved" list of all bookmarks
- Filter bookmarks by course and content type
- Remove a bookmark
- Bookmark state visible on the content item (bookmarked / not)
- Bookmarks private to the Student
- Bookmarks sync across web and mobile
- Bookmark event logging (add, remove)
- Audit logging of the content bookmarks

**Student User Journey:**
1. Student is viewing a lesson and taps the bookmark icon; the item is added to "Saved".
2. The bookmark icon on the item changes to indicate it is saved.
3. Student opens "Saved" and sees all bookmarked items.
4. Student filters "Saved" by course (Mathematics) and by type (video).
5. Student taps a bookmarked item and is taken to it.
6. Student removes a bookmark that is no longer needed; it disappears from "Saved".
7. Student switches to the mobile app; the same bookmarks are present.
8. Student opens Profile → "Activity" and confirms the bookmark events are recorded.

**Rules & Edge Cases:**
- A content item can be bookmarked once; toggling removes it.
- Bookmarks are private to the Student and not shared.
- Bookmarks are synchronized across web and mobile.
- Removing a bookmark does not delete the underlying content.
- Filters operate on course and content type.
- Bookmark events (add, remove) are logged with the item and the timestamp.
- The content bookmarks is audit-logged with the account, the item, and the timestamp.

### 4.2 Personal Notes
**What it does:** Lets the Student write personal notes attached to a content item or a course. Notes support text, are editable and deletable, and are visible only to the Student. They help the Student capture insights, questions, and revision points while learning.

**Sub-features:**

- Note text entry with autosave
- Edit and delete a note
- List of notes filtered by course and item
- Notes visible only to the Student
- Notes sync across web and mobile
- Note character limit with counter
- Note event logging (create, edit, delete)
- Audit logging of the personal notes

**Student User Journey:**
1. Student opens a lesson and taps "Add note".
2. Student types a note ("Remember: the chain rule applies to composite functions") and it autosaves.
3. The note appears in the lesson's notes list.
4. Student opens "My notes" and filters by course (Mathematics).
5. Student edits the note to add an example, then saves.
6. Student deletes a note that is no longer relevant.
7. Student switches to the mobile app; the notes are present.
8. Student opens Profile → "Activity" and confirms the note events are recorded.

**Rules & Edge Cases:**
- A note is attached to a specific content item or course.
- Notes autosave as the Student types; an explicit save is not required.
- Notes are private to the Student and not shared.
- A note has a character limit; the counter warns as the limit is approached.
- Deleting a note is permanent for that item.
- Note events (create, edit, delete) are logged with the item and the timestamp.
- The personal notes is audit-logged with the account, the item, and the timestamp.

### 4.3 Highlighting
**What it does:** Lets the Student highlight text in articles and read-through content and attach an optional note to a highlight. Highlights are visible in the content and collected in a personal "Highlights" list for quick revision. Highlights are private to the Student.

**Sub-features:**
- Select text in an article to create a highlight
- Choose a highlight color
- Attach an optional note to a highlight
- "Highlights" list filtered by course and item
- Jump to a highlight from the list

5. Student taps a highlight in the list; the article scrolls to it.
6. Student edits the note and saves.
7. Student removes a highlight; the text returns to normal.
8. Student opens Profile → "Activity" and confirms the highlight events are recorded.

**Rules & Edge Cases:**
- A highlight is created by selecting text in an article; it is tied to that text span.
- A highlight color is chosen from the offered palette.
- A note on a highlight is optional.
- Highlights are private to the Student and not shared.
- Removing a highlight also removes its note.
- Highlight events (create, edit, remove) are logged with the item and the timestamp.
- The highlighting is audit-logged with the account, the item, and the timestamp.
