## 1. AI Adaptive Exams

### 1.1 Adaptive Exam Delivery
**What it does:** Delivers exams that adapt to the Student's responses in real time. The AI selects the next question based on the Student's previous answers, adjusting difficulty to target the Student's ability level. This produces a more accurate ability estimate in fewer questions and a personalized challenge for each Student.

**Sub-features:**
- Exam starts at a baseline difficulty
- Next question selected based on previous answers (adaptive algorithm)
- Difficulty adjusts up on correct answers, down on incorrect
- Question pool drawn from the relevant subject and topic
- Exam length in questions (fixed) or time (fixed)
- Real-time ability estimate updated after each answer
- Exam ends when the question or time limit is reached
- Adaptive behavior invisible to the Student (no difficulty labels)
- Exam session event logging (start, each answer, end)
- Audit logging of the adaptive exam delivery

**Student User Journey:**
1. Student opens an adaptive exam in Mathematics and clicks "Start".
2. The first question appears at a baseline difficulty.
3. Student answers correctly; the next question is slightly harder.
4. Student answers incorrectly; the next question is easier.
5. The exam continues, adapting after each answer, for the set number of questions.
6. The exam ends when the question limit is reached; the Student is taken to the results.
7. Student opens Profile → "Activity" and confirms the exam session events are recorded.

**Rules & Edge Cases:**
- The adaptive algorithm selects the next question from the relevant subject/topic pool.
- Difficulty adjusts based on correctness; the Student never sees a difficulty label.
- The exam ends at the question or time limit, whichever is configured.
- The ability estimate is updated after each answer but not shown during the exam.
- Exam session events (start, each answer, end) are logged with the exam and the timestamp.
- The adaptive exam delivery is audit-logged with the account, the exam, and the timestamp.

### 1.2 Exam Question Types
**What it does:** Supports the question types used in adaptive and standard exams: multiple choice, multiple select, true/false, fill in the blank, short answer, and numeric answer. Each type has its own input and marking behavior, and all are available to the Student within an exam.

**Sub-features:**
- Multiple choice (single correct answer)
- Multiple select (more than one correct answer)
- True/False
- Fill in the blank (text match with tolerance)
- Numeric answer (numeric match with tolerance)
- Short answer (free text, rubric-based)
- Question navigation (next, previous, jump)
- Flag a question for review
- Answer state tracking (answered, flagged, unanswered)
- Question type event logging
- Audit logging of the exam question types

**Student User Journey:**
1. Student is in an exam and sees a multiple choice question; Student selects an option.
2. Student moves to a multiple select question and selects two options.
3. Student answers a True/False question.
4. Student types a value into a fill in the blank field.
5. Student enters a number for a numeric answer question.
6. Student writes a short answer and flags the question for review.
7. Student uses the question palette to jump between questions and see their state (answered, flagged, unanswered).
8. Student opens Profile → "Activity" and confirms the question interactions are recorded.

**Rules & Edge Cases:**
- Each question type has its own input and marking behavior.
- Multiple select requires all correct options and no incorrect ones for full marks.
- Fill in the blank and numeric answers allow a configured tolerance.
- A flagged question is marked for review but can still be answered.
- The question palette shows the state of every question (answered, flagged, unanswered).
- Question interactions are logged with the question, the type, and the timestamp.
- The exam question types is audit-logged with the account, the question, and the timestamp.

### 1.3 Exam Timer and Submission
**What it does:** Manages the time limit for an exam and the submission process. A countdown timer is shown, the exam auto-submits at time expiry, and the Student can submit early. Unanswered questions are marked as such on submission.

**Sub-features:**
- Countdown timer shown during the exam
- Auto-submit at time expiry
- Manual "Submit exam" action (early submission)
- Confirmation before manual submission showing unanswered count
- Unanswered questions recorded as unanswered
- Submission timestamp recorded
- Post-submission redirect to results
- Timer and submission event logging
- Audit logging of the exam timer and submission

**Student User Journey:**
1. Student starts an exam; a countdown timer (e.g., 30:00) is shown.
2. The timer counts down as Student answers questions.
3. With 5 minutes left, the timer changes color to warn.
4. Student finishes and clicks "Submit exam"; a confirmation shows "2 questions unanswered — submit?".
5. Student confirms; the exam is submitted and Student is redirected to the results.
6. In another exam, Student does not submit in time; the exam auto-submits at 00:00.
7. Student opens Profile → "Activity" and confirms the submission events are recorded.

**Rules & Edge Cases:**
- The timer counts down from the configured exam duration.
- The exam auto-submits at time expiry; no further answers are accepted.
- Manual submission requires confirmation when there are unanswered questions.
- Unanswered questions are recorded as unanswered (not zero-marked as answered).
- The submission timestamp is recorded.
- Timer and submission events are logged with the exam and the timestamp.
- The exam timer and submission is audit-logged with the account, the exam, and the timestamp.
